Privileg Compact Freiarm
Everything in its right place
Much like contemporay Sears Kenmore machines, this is a OEM model sold under many skins and brand names. In fact, this very model was also known as a later generation of the famed Kenmore 158 range. Other variants were sold under the Global and Frister & Rossman brands as well. This instance is branded as Privileg, as it was sold through the Quelle German distributor and catalog, similar to the north-american Sears and japanese Riccar.
Highly regarded for its construction quality and reliability, this machine is a compact beast with very complete features, including various stitches selectable via the large dial at the top, only slightly visible from the front. It even includes stretch stiches with auto reversing, quite uncommon for this range and size.
Reviews commonly praise these little machines for their dependability and constant delivery. My only gripe here is the questionable usability of the reverse button, a horizontal little slab that requires deliberate grabbing to be turned, not the most immediate gesture. The “party trick” of this machine is the spring loaded kick-back foot under the free arm, which extends back to provide more stability. This is visible in the images below.
Aesthetics are of course a strong point of appeal here, and this machine had a wide range of colours and combinations to choose form during its lifetime. This unit is sadly missing its accessory box, so it works in free-arm mode only. It is otherwise in excellent functional and cosmetic condition. As a Privileg edition, it is quite a rare specimen.
